When is the best time to visit Morocco with a camper? It’s one of the questions we receive most often from travellers considering a road trip through Morocco. The short answer: it depends on your travel style and the regions you want to explore. The longer answer is explained below — per season — including our own experience as a family regularly travelling through Morocco with a camper.
Why the travel season matters for a camper trip
A camper trip through Morocco is different from a hotel holiday. You sleep, cook and spend a large part of your time outdoors. Temperature, wind and sunshine therefore play a bigger role than during a typical city trip. The best time to visit Morocco with a camper therefore depends on several factors:
- Day and night temperatures
- How busy campsites and camper spots are
- The region you want to explore (coast, inland or mountains)
- Travelling with or without children
Travelling in spring (March – May)
For many travellers this is the ideal period. Temperatures are pleasant, usually between 20 and 28 degrees. Both the inland regions and the desert are comfortable to visit. Advantages of travelling in spring.
- Green landscapes after winter rains
- No extreme heat
- Perfect climate for longer road trips
For families this is also a great time: warm enough to spend time outdoors during the day, while nights are still comfortable.
Summer in Morocco (June – August)
Summer in Morocco is a lively and social period. Many locals have holidays, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Especially in the evenings, life really comes alive. Boulevards and squares are filled with families spending time outside. Children play games, drive small toy cars or jump on trampolines, while adults often join in enthusiastically. You will see small market stalls, street performers and temporary activities organised especially during summer.
It can be busy during this period, but that is also what makes it special. The streets stay lively until late at night and you experience the typical Moroccan atmosphere everywhere. For many travellers it is a great opportunity to experience daily life up close. However, the inland areas can become very hot in summer. Temperatures of 40°C or more are not unusual in cities such as Marrakech or Fes. Does that mean you should avoid travelling then? Not necessarily — but smart planning is important. Along the Atlantic coast — for example in Essaouira, Taghazout or Tamraght — the ocean breeze provides cooling. Even away from the coast there are many places in Morocco where you can stay in nature.
Wild camping is common in many areas and often free of charge. This flexibility allows you to look for cooler places or choose higher altitude locations.
Our tips for travelling in summer
- Plan drives in the morning or evening
- Choose shaded camping spots
- Combine coastal areas with higher mountain regions
- Choose campsites with a swimming pool
With good planning, a camper trip in summer is absolutely possible. For our own children it is even one of their favourite periods because of the many activities on the boulevards.
Autumn (September – November)
This might be the best time to visit Morocco with a camper. The extreme heat has disappeared, the sea is still warm and inland temperatures become comfortable again. Temperatures usually range between 22 and 30 degrees. Advantages of autumn travel:
- Less crowded than summer or winter
- Comfortable temperatures
- Ideal for longer road trips
- Fewer campers on the road
For many travellers this season offers the perfect balance between weather and tranquillity.
Winter in Morocco (December – February)
Many people underestimate how attractive Morocco can be in winter. During the day temperatures are often mild, but evenings can cool down — especially along the coast. In some coastal areas it may actually feel cooler than inland regions. From our experience, the inland regions are often the nicest to explore during winter. The air is clear, the climate pleasant and cities like Marrakech are great to visit.
Along the coast it becomes more comfortable from Agadir and further south. Northern coastal areas can sometimes feel cooler and windier.
What makes winter extra special is that many families travel through Morocco with campers during this time. This often leads to spontaneous encounters at campsites and camper spots. For long-term travellers and winter visitors, Morocco is surprisingly diverse during winter — as long as you plan your route wisely.
Best Travel Time for Morocco with a Camper by Region
Not every region has the same climate.
Atlantic Coast
Suitable almost all year round. Cooling during summer and mild in winter — especially south of Agadir.
Inland (Marrakech, Fes)
Best periods: March–May and October–December. In winter it can sometimes be more pleasant than the coast.
Desert (Merzouga)
Avoid high summer. Spring and autumn are ideal.
Atlas Mountains
Perfect in spring and autumn. Snow can fall in higher areas during winter.
Best time to visit Morocco with children
Travelling with children makes temperature even more important. From our experience as a family of four, the most comfortable months are October through May. During this period the climate is stable and you will meet many other travelling families. Summer holidays are also possible, but we recommend focusing on the coastal regions. You can check the official climate data here.
Keep Ramadan in mind
During Ramadan the atmosphere in Morocco can feel slightly different. Many local restaurants close during the day and daily life shifts more towards the evening. For some travellers this can be a unique cultural experience. For others it may feel quieter. If you are expecting lively terraces and daytime restaurants, it is good to check beforehand when Ramadan takes place.
