The route continues through Tafraoute and the Anti-Atlas before taking you towards Taroudant and back to Marrakech. We have designed this route around the way we like to travel through Morocco ourselves: not rushing from one destination to the next, but leaving enough space to stay longer when you find a place you enjoy. You can complete the route in around 10 days, but we recommend 12–14 days if you have the time. With two or three weeks, you can make the most of the flexibility that travelling through Morocco by campervan gives you.

The route at a glance

Marrakech → Agadir/Aourir → Tamraght → Taghazout → Atlantic Coast → Tafraoute → Taroudant → Marrakech

Recommended duration

10 days: enough to see the main highlights.

12–14 days: our recommended duration for a more relaxed trip.

2–3 weeks: ideal if you want to spend more time along the coast and in the Anti-Atlas.

Best time to travel: oktober to may

Approximate driving times

Marrakech → Aourir: 2–3 hours

Aourir → Taghazout: approximately 20 minutes

Atlantic Coast → Tafraoute: approximately 3 hours

Tafraoute → Taroudant: approximately 3 hours

Taroudant → Marrakech: approximately 3 hours

This is not a strict itinerary. Think of it as a route framework. You can follow the general route while adjusting the number of nights depending on your interests and how quickly you like to travel.

Why choose this southern Morocco campervan route?

What makes this route special is the variety of experiences packed into a relatively compact journey.

You start with the culture and energy of Marrakech, then travel towards the Atlantic Coast for beaches, surfing and coastal villages. From there, the landscape changes completely as you head inland towards the Anti-Atlas and Tafraoute.

You can:

explore Marrakech by e-bike;

relax at a campsite with a pool;

enjoy an evening at Chez Ali;

stay close to the Atlantic Ocean;

surf or take a surf lesson;

explore Taghazout and its local restaurants;

visit the skatepark;

discover the local atmosphere of Tafraoute;

explore the mountains and valleys of the Anti-Atlas;

continue towards Taroudant before returning to Marrakech.

It is a route with plenty of variety, but without requiring you to change locations every day.

Days 1–3: Start Your Morocco Campervan Adventure in Marrakech

Our advice is simple: don’t rush to leave Marrakech.

After arriving in Morocco and collecting your campervan, give yourself a few days to settle in before starting the road trip.

Where to stay near Marrakech

We recommend starting at campsite Le Relais de Marrakech.

It is a convenient base for exploring Marrakech while still giving you space to relax after your journey. The campsite has a pool, and there is also a local market within walking distance.

This is useful when you want to pick up a few things or simply experience a more local side of the area without having to drive into the centre of Marrakech.

Day 1: Explore Marrakech by e-bike

One of our favourite ways to discover Marrakech is by e-bike. We recommend exploring the city with Ebike Explore, especially if you want to see more than just the main tourist attractions. Cycling through Marrakech gives you a different perspective of the city and allows you to see more of its atmosphere and everyday life. It is also an activity that works well for both younger and older travellers.

Day 2: Relax and enjoy Chez Ali

After an active day exploring Marrakech, we recommend keeping the next day relaxed or visit Ourika Waterfalls. Enjoy the pool at the campsite, take your time and simply recover from your journey. In the evening, you can visit the Chez Ali show.

One practical advantage for campervan travellers is that you can arrange to be picked up directly from the campsite. You therefore do not need to drive into Marrakech in the evening or worry about finding somewhere to park.

Day 3: Take your time before leaving Marrakech

There is no need to rush out of Marrakech. Enjoy a relaxed morning, organise your campervan and prepare to leave for the coast. You also do not need to do a large supermarket shop before leaving. Once you arrive in Aourir, you will find shops, restaurants and everything you need for your stay. Many places are open until late in the evening. Take your time. The Atlantic Coast is only a few hours away.

Day 4: Marrakech to Aourir — Your First Taste of the Atlantic Coast

The drive from Marrakech to Aourir takes approximately 2–3 hours via the motorway. It is a relatively easy first driving day and a great transition from the city to the coast. After the busy streets of Marrakech, the atmosphere changes quickly. The landscape opens up and you arrive at the Atlantic Ocean.

Where to stay in Aourir

For a one-night stop, you can choose between an official campsite or an overnight spot directly beside the ocean and beach, where permitted and according to current local conditions. One of the things we love about travelling through Morocco by campervan is that you can drive for just a few hours and finish the day beside the ocean.

If you prefer the facilities of an official campsite, Camping Aourir is another option.

Why stop in Aourir?

Aourir is a convenient first stop after Marrakech.

From here, you have easy access to:

the ocean and beach;

restaurants and cafés within walking distance;

local shops;

surf shops;

the wider coastal area around Agadir and Taghazout.

💡 Riad on Wheels tip: For a 10-day route, we recommend one night in Aourir before continuing along the coast. But if you have more time, you can easily stay longer. We have stayed in Aourir for weeks ourselves. It is one of those places where a one-night stop can easily become a much longer stay. That is one of the advantages of travelling by campervan: you do not always have to move on just because your original itinerary says so.

Days 5–7: Aourir, Tamraght, Taghazout & the Atlantic Coast

After Aourir, continue along the coast towards Tamraght and Taghazout. The drive to Taghazout takes approximately 20 minutes, but the distance between the places is not the reason to move on quickly. This is a part of the route where we recommend taking your time.

Explore the coast at your own pace

Along the coast, you will find different options for overnight stays, including official campsites and places close to the ocean where overnight stays are permitted. The exact options can change, so always check the current local situation before staying overnight. The advantage of travelling with a campervan is that you can choose your own pace. You can spend a night in one place, drive a little further the next day or stay for several nights if you find somewhere you really like.

Surfing around Tamraght and Taghazout

This part of the coast is well known for its surf culture. You can take surf lessons, rent equipment or simply enjoy watching the waves and experiencing the atmosphere. You do not have to be an experienced surfer to enjoy this part of the coast. The area is also a good option for travellers who are not interested in surfing. There are beaches, cafés, restaurants and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy the ocean.

Spend a day in Taghazout

Taghazout is one of those places where you can easily spend an entire day without planning every hour.

You can:

explore the village;

eat at one of the many small cafés and restaurants;

spend time at the beach;

go surfing;

visit the skatepark;

watch the ocean and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

💡 Riad on Wheels: The skatepark is a particularly fun option if you are travelling with children or teenagers, but it is also a nice place to visit simply for the views and atmosphere.

How long should you stay?

For a 10-day route, we recommend allowing several nights for the coastal area.

You could spend:

one night in Aourir;

two or more nights around Tamraght and Taghazout;

additional nights along the coast if you have more time.

💡 Riad on Wheels: If you have a two-week itinerary, we would personally add extra time here rather than trying to add as many additional destinations as possible. The Atlantic Coast is one of the places where it is easy to arrive with a plan to stay for one night and decide to stay for three.

Days 8–9: From the Atlantic Coast to Tafraoute

After spending time along the Atlantic Coast, the route turns inland towards the Anti-Atlas. The drive to Tafraoute takes approximately three hours. This is one of the biggest changes in scenery during the route. You leave behind the ocean, beaches and surf culture and enter a landscape of mountains, valleys and small local communities.

Discover Tafraoute

Tafraoute offers a very different experience from the coast. The town is surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and valleys. The atmosphere is relaxed and local, and the area is popular with camper travellers. Compared with the more touristy coastal destinations, Tafraoute feels much less tourist-oriented. You can visit the local market, explore the town and spend time simply enjoying the landscape.

A very different kind of campervan experience

One of the things that makes Tafraoute memorable is the way local life becomes part of your stay. The overnight price in the area can be around 150 MAD per night, depending on the location and current conditions. Local services may come directly to the camping area. Fresh bread may be brought to you. Someone may ask if you would like your laundry done. Sometimes, even a local hairdresser comes by. These are small details, but they are exactly the kind of experiences that make travelling through Morocco by campervan different from staying in a hotel.

What can you do around Tafraoute?

Depending on your interests, you can:

explore the local market;

discover the surrounding valleys;

walk through the mountain landscapes;

go climbing;

spend time in the local area;

meet other camper travellers.

For a 10-day itinerary, we recommend two nights in Tafraoute. If you want to climb or explore the surrounding area more extensively, stay for three or four nights.

Day 9 from Tafraoute to Taroudant

From Tafraoute, the route continues towards Taroudant. The drive takes approximately three hours and takes you through changing landscapes, with mountain scenery and oases along the way. The route is generally well-paved and suitable for campervan travel, although, as always in Morocco, we recommend taking your time and adjusting your driving to the road and conditions around you.

Discover Taroudant

Taroudant is often described as the “little sister of Marrakech.” We have not yet explored Taroudant ourselves, so we do not want to pretend that we can give you first-hand recommendations about the city. However, several Riad on Wheels guests have visited Taroudant and enjoyed their time there. They also shared beautiful photos from this part of their journey. Based on their experiences, Taroudant is a stop worth considering if you have enough time. It offers another opportunity to experience a different side of southern Morocco before returning to Marrakech.

Returning to Marrakech

From Taroudant, it takes approximately three hours to return to Marrakech.

This completes the route:

Marrakech → Aourir → Tamraght → Taghazout → Atlantic Coast → Tafraoute → Taroudant → Marrakech

The route can be completed in around 10 days, but you can easily extend it if you have more time.

How many days do you need for this Morocco campervan route?

10 days

Ten days is enough to experience the main highlights of the route.

This version allows you to combine:

Marrakech;

Aourir;

the Atlantic Coast;

Taghazout;

Tafraoute;

Taroudant.

The pace is relatively efficient, but the route is manageable.

12–14 days

This is our recommended duration. The extra days give you more freedom to:

stay longer along the coast;

explore Tafraoute at a slower pace;

spend more time in places you enjoy;

leave room for spontaneous stops.

If we were planning this route for ourselves, we would prefer two weeks over trying to complete everything as quickly as possible.

2–3 weeks

With two or three weeks, you can really enjoy the freedom of travelling through Morocco by campervan. You can stay longer along the Atlantic Coast, spend more time in the Anti-Atlas and change your plans when you discover somewhere you want to explore further. You do not need to fill every day with a new destination. Sometimes the best part of a campervan journey is staying an extra night.

What Is the best time to travel this route?

For this Southern Morocco campervan route, we recommend travelling between October and April. This period generally offers more comfortable conditions for exploring Marrakech, spending time along the Atlantic Coast and travelling through the Anti-Atlas. The summer months can be very hot, particularly inland. The exact weather will depend on the month and the location, so always check the forecast before your trip.

Campsites and overnight options

One of the advantages of travelling through Morocco by campervan is the variety of overnight options. Depending on the location and current local conditions, you may find:

official campsites;

camping areas;

places close to the ocean;

other overnight options used by camper travellers.

For the Atlantic Coast in particular, many travellers enjoy having the choice between the facilities of a campsite and a more independent overnight experience. Always check whether a location is currently suitable and permitted for overnight stays. When you rent a campervan with Riad on Wheels, we can also share current recommendations based on your route and travel dates. Do you already know the app: Park4night?

Is this route suitable for first-time campervan travellers?

Yes. This route is a good introduction to travelling through Morocco by campervan because it combines manageable driving distances with a variety of landscapes and experiences.

You can:

start slowly in Marrakech;

drive a relatively straightforward route towards the coast;

spend several nights in one area;

choose between different types of overnight stays;

adjust your route as you go.

You do not need to follow the itinerary exactly. Some travellers will want to spend more time surfing and exploring the coast. Others may prefer the mountains and local atmosphere around Tafraoute. The route is a framework, not a fixed tour.

Why rent a campervan for this route?

A campervan gives you the flexibility to experience Morocco at your own pace. You can wake up near the ocean, spend a few days in the mountains and explore local towns without changing hotels every night. You can also adapt your plans. If you love a place, stay longer. If you are ready to move on, continue your journey. At Riad on Wheels, we know Morocco from the road and we understand that every traveller has a different idea of the perfect trip. Some people want a clear route before they leave. Others want to decide as they go. We are happy to help you think through your route, choose a campervan and prepare for your journey. Our goal is not to give you a strict itinerary that you have to follow. It is to help you make the most of your own Moroccan campervan adventure.

View our campervans

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you complete this Morocco campervan route in 10 days?

Yes.
